The history of Balestard-La-Tonnelle,whose vineyards lie between those of Chateaux Soutard and Trottevieille, goes back a long way. The wine is named after a local ecclesiastic, and extolled by the poet Francois Villon in the fifteenth century. Villon’s poem is depicted on the label: the wine is described as a ‘’divine nectar’’. The other part of the name refers to a tower somewhat similar to that Chateau Latour, an ancient mill, which stand in the grounds. In 1868 the property belonged to the Courrech family. It then passed to M. Bertaurs-Coulure, who sold it to M. Berthon in 1923. Roger Capdemourlin, already the owner of the Chateau that bears this name, married M. Berthon’s daughter and ran both for 30years before retiring in favour of his son Jacques.
Balestard-La-Tonnelle isa reliable, second division Saint-Emilion: Full-Bodies, often quite sturdy, rich and spicy. I score it moderately well, both from cask in the spring after the vintage, and later when I see it in bottle. But it has never suggested itself as contender for promotion. The 2000 was better than usual, though.
