About A. Ligeret.....

The LIGERET family originally comes from the region to the west of Dijon .

Jean-Baptiste LIGERET was the first member of the family to move to Nuits-Saint-Georges in around 1700. He was a lawyer, King’s councilor and tax inspector, as were both his son and grandson. He soon was also Mayor of Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Quite outside of their professional activities, the LIGERET family made a living from the revenues from their vineyards.

Antione Jean Marie LIGERET(1805-1865) was the real founder (in 1832) of the Burgundy wine-merchant which still bears his name.

In this way, he has able to establish a commercial back-up for his wine-making interests in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Beaune and Corton.

He was made Mayor of  Nuits-Saint-Georges in 1848-1849 and in 1851-1852 and was also General Councillor of the Cote d’Or.

He had four children. One of his two daughters married someone from Alsace and then found herself living in Germany when that country annexed Alsace and Lorraine in 1871.

On the death of their father, the two daughters inherited the largest part of the vineyards while the two sons inherited the business.

By this time, LIGERET was very well known in France and Belgium , and even in North America , although they stopped trading in this market because of high level of competition.

Beside his professional occupation, Gabriel LIGERET, the only surviving son, was lieutenant of louveterie. This was an honorary tittle, but one which leads us to suppose that he came from a very rich family, as holders of this tittle needed to maintain a team of servants as well as large hunting area.

The youngest of Gabriel’s three children, Louis(1893,1952), took over the wine business and developed it, and began trading in Switzerland , where LIGERET today, holds a very privileged position. He managed the Company until his death.

As Gabriel had no children, this widow decided to sell the business to a friend of his husband, Charles Thomas (1878-1976) and the family name of LIGERER disappered from Burgundy .

The Thomas family had made interests in wine-making in Burgundy . They owned their own vineyards of about 20 hectares, producing mainly Grands-Crus of Cote de Nuits and

Cote de Beaune. They changed the merchants into a company, but retained the name.

Today, LIGERET is present on more than 30 different countries all over the world.

The Thomas family is still the sole owner today and, if the name of LIGERET has gone from strength to strength, it is because they have continued to keep the high standards of quality that were set nearly three centuries ago.
